Kingston Camera Club

Guide for New Members

Aims and Objectives :-

The aims and objectives of the club shall be;

(a)   to promote the art and craft of photography.

(b)   to provide a meeting place for those interested in photography and where practical to facilitate provision of technical advice and assistance to members.

(c)  to make the enjoyment of photography accessible to a wider community.

The club welcomes anyone who is interested in Photography. Most of the meetings are held on a Monday evening between 8-10 pm, with a break for tea. We have a membership which varies between 35 and 45 people. There are about 34 meetings a year, made up of lectures, competitions, AGM, bring and buy sale etc.

Together with the Exhibition, Social events, Outings and Outside Competitions, this makes up our year.

The subscription is due when we start our year in September and must be paid before any internal competitions can be entered. Payment is made to the treasurer who can also tell you the cost.

THE COMMITTEE

The committee meets around 8 times a year, and is held at a member’s house and is elected at the Annual General Meeting which takes place in February. If you would like to serve on the Committee, please put your name forward at the next AGM; you would be most welcome.

A full list of officers and committee members is in the programme.

A copy of the Camera Club Constitution is on the notice board.

THE EXHIBITION

The Exhibition is the premier event of the year and is held between September and November in the Art Gallery above Kingston Museum in Wheatfield Way (rear of the Library). All members are welcome to enter pictures, from beginners to advanced, both prints and slides. A private view is held prior to the opening of the Exhibition, and is open to all members and a guest.

Pictures are handed in at the Club about six weeks before the Exhibition; this is to allow for judging and organization. Details of the Exhibition are available with Entry forms.

COMPETITIONS

There are ten monthly internal competitions a year - five print and five for projected images -  both for standard and advanced photographers, plus the “Bill Owen Trophy for imaginative pictures” and the Best Print and Slide/PDI of the Year trophy.

During the year Camera Clubs compete with each other in various competitions, this gives the opportunity to visit other clubs meet other photographers and see their work. These are either formal or light-hearted friendlies. We try to organize Friendly competitions with other local clubs during the season home and away.

Full information on the competitions can be found here.

PROGRAMME

We have a very varied programme from talks by very experienced photographers to our own in house discussions to competitions I have mentioned previously.

DISTINCTIONS

Some members like to pursue their photography through the Royal Photographic Society and PAGB.  We have members who have achieved distinctions in both and would be very willing to help you get started. Please talk to committee members who will point you in the right direction.

BRING AND BUY SALE (Members and invited guests only)

One of our fund raising events is the bring and buy sale where various items are sold – from cameras to books, flash guns to tripods  and bric-a-brac along with CDs. Run in the form of an auction is good evening. Unfortunately NOT CLOTHES OR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT.

THE SOCIAL SIDE OF KCC

The Club hold a weekend away each year and if possible a day outing.

The Christmas evening

The Monday before Christmas we hold an informal evening. The first half hour may be a quiz of some sort, followed by a buffet and raffle. A good chance for a chat before the New Year.

AND FINALLY

If anyone would like any technical advice on what camera to buy what film or how to mount prints, mask slides etc or anything about the club PLEASE ASK.

This guide is designed to help newer members understand what goes on at Kingston Camera Club and the way it operates. I hope it will answer some of your questions. Please let me know if you have any questions which I haven’t answered.

The Club held its centenary in 1993, making it one of the longest running clubs in the country.
